Savannah is arguably one of the most romantic cities in the South – which makes it a perfect destination for an elopement or intimate wedding. With moss-draped oaks, cobblestone streets and its southern charm, it’s easy to see why so many people come here to get married. Scattered all throughout the historic district are 22 squares – each having it’s own unique vibe – so if you’re searching for some of the most perfect squares to elope in Savannah, you have plenty to choose from!
Below are six beautiful squares to elope in Savannah that show off this city’s indescribable beauty, making the perfect backdrop for your Savannah elopement or Savannah wedding.
One of the most elegant squares in Savannah, Monterey Square is surrounded by stunning antebellum homes and beautiful historic buildings – meaning wherever you choose to get married in Monterey Square, you’ll have a gorgeous backdrop behind you. Not to mention the live oaks draped in Spanish moss and it’s picturesque greenery just about everywhere you turn.
Another standout square perfect to elope in Savannah is Columbia Square. It’s cozy, quiet, and has a fountain that feels so quintessential Savannah. Because it’s somewhat tucked away from the more touristy areas of the city, you’ll have way less foot traffic – meaning eloping in Columbia Square might really be just you and a few passersby.
One of the lesser known squares to elope in Savannah is definitely Madison Square – with it’s incredible architectural surroundings like the Green-Meldrim House and the spooky Sorrel-Weed House, this square is a Gothic Revival lover’s dream. It doesn’t hurt that it’s got beautiful tree-lined walkways and lovely greenery throughout, either.
Eloping in Chippewa Square can be a lot of things, but cinematic is the word that perfectly describes the vibe here! And yes, this is the square that Forrest Gump’s “life is like a box of chocolates) line was filmed, so if you’re into movies, then look no further than this square. It’s also surrounded by plenty of historic landmarks like the iconic Savannah Theatre, making for a perfect photo op. This is a lively, energetic square though, so expect it to be a bit more bustling than others on this list.
Another square in Savannah to elope in that is off-the-beaten path! It’s still got live oaks draped in Spanish moss and is bordered by 19th-century row houses which gives this square a lot of character. One of the parts of this square, though, is that there is no monuments or statues in its center and instead has lots of open green space, which means plenty of spots to tuck yourselves into for a wedding ceremony.
Dreamy and historic, another great square to elope in Savannah is the beautiful Lafayette Square. With a fountain at its center (much like Columbia Square!) and the stunning Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist on one corner, the aesthetic simply can’t be beat. The lighting here is always so striking, and the live Oaks and fountain tend to be draped in warm, golden sunlight on beautiful days.
