Eloping in Savannah is surprisingly simple and easy – perfect for anyone who wants a simple but stunning elopement in a historical city. While there are a few things you’ll want to know before planning your Savannah elopement, it’s by no means a challenge! The beauty of eloping in Savannah GA is that you’ll see there are very few things you need to do to actually get married. Below are a few helpful things to know about eloping in Savannah and how you can prepare for a carefree wedding day.
If you’ve already decided you want to elope in Savannah, you’ll need to first take a few legal steps. You and your partner will both need to receive your marriage license. If you’re traveling from out-of-state, your license can be obtained at the Chatham County Courthouse in downtown Savannah. If you’re a resident of Georgia, you’re able to apply in any county. You’ll need to make an appointment, which you can do on the Chatham County website, and you’ll need to bring your driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate. There is no waiting period, so if you’re thinking of eloping in Savannah the very day you receive your license, you can do so!
While we have countless bed and breakfasts, hotels, and wedding venues where you can elope in Savannah, our squares and parks are totally free to have a wedding in (so long as you’re under a certain guest count, of course!). With 22 squares sprawled all across downtown, they’re basically begging for elopements and intimate weddings! While it’s totally free to get married in Savannah’s squares and parks, there are some scenarios where you will need to pay for a permit. If you’re looking to add chairs/seating, ceremony arches, have more than a few dozen guests, or simply want the park or square all to yourself, you’ll want to apply for a permit to do so. You can find all of the necessary information on eloping in Savannah squares and parks here.
If there’s one thing you’ll want to know about me, it’s that I’m an animal-person. More specifically, a dog-person! I love having dogs at my elopement ceremonies and think it’s so special to incorporate your dog into such an important day for you and your partner. Savannah is very pet-friendly (you’ll see bowls of water along the streets from restaurants and boutiques) and because of that, so are our elopements! You can bring your pup with you anywhere downtown if you’re looking to elope in Savannah and want to share your happiness with your pet.
You’ll often hear that if it’s raining in Savannah, just wait a few minutes and you’ll likely have sunshine – and that’s totally true! The weather in Savannah can be pretty unpredictable, with torrential downpours, thunder storms, and intense humidity, especially during the summer months. But that’s a part of the fun if you ask me – and hang with me on this one!
Yes, inclement weather on your wedding day can mean moving around our timeline, changing locations, and bringing plenty of rain gear, the couples I work with fully embrace this aspect of their day and choose to work with the weather instead of against it. So yes, that might mean your hair getting wet, your dress train getting muddied, and adding an umbrella into the mix, but it’s Savannah elopements like this that are my absolute favorite. I watch the weather forecast intently in the weeks leading up to your day, and will alert you if I think we need to switch gears and plan for inclement weather – but truly, if you simply embrace the weather and not fret over it, your photos will turn out dramatic, moody, and so romantic. Trust.
